Wallpapers by Björn Nilsson

Drawing inspiration from the culture of Lyon, to the markets and mosaics of Marrakech. Rooted in the memories of my traditional Swedish upbringing, everything is woven together with my forty years of experience as a wallpaper designer.

A Wallpaper Collection is Born

An Idea Takes Shape

Typically, the process begins with a request that we discuss and develop. Then, I start to think, sketch, and think again.

My strategy is to create more patterns than needed for the final collection during the sketching phase, and then choose the patterns that we believe will make a beautiful match for people’s homes.

Usually, it takes between 1-1.5 years from idea to holding a finished wallpaper roll in my hands.

Coloring and Production

The next step is to choose the printing technique and order wallpaper rolls. If the wallpaper has four colors, four rolls are needed. After that, I begin to create color palettes, making many more than will ultimately be included in the collection. Then, a selection is made, and 3-6 color palettes per pattern are sent for test printing.

Inspiration That Transcends Sweden’s Borders

I have the privilege of living in various places around the world, in Sweden, France, Spain, and Morocco. It is in these diverse yet remarkable cultures that I find my inspiration. What I have noticed is the recurring pull towards Sweden, a return to my roots, and the exploration of our country’s culture and nature.

A Wallpaper Designer’s Evolution

My grandmother, Elsa, played a significant role in my interest in art. She was my creative mentor as a child, and with her, everything was possible. She taught me that there are no limits to artistic expression. Elsa worked as a seamstress in Borås until she met my grandfather.

I grew up in the 1960s, a time when Swedish design and pattern design were thriving. Many interesting designers and patterns emerged during that period, and even then, I felt that design was something I wanted to pursue.

Reflecting on my youth, one of my strongest pattern memories is from a series by Sven Fristedt. This series might be one of the reasons why I create my own patterns today.

“What used to take days can now be done in a few hours.”

I have been working with wallpaper and design for almost 40 years, and technology has evolved. When I started, there were no computers involved in pattern creation; I drew everything by hand. Today, most of the drawing is done on the computer, which is a fantastic tool. What used to take days can now be done in a few hours.
